Pittsburgh “Vintage” (Grape) Chamber Lamp in Opal Glass - Rare
Circa 1900–1905 — “Vintage”
The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Description
This authentic antique chamber lamp was produced by The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company during the circa 1900–1905 period and features the well-regarded Vintage pattern, one of the firm’s most attractive and versatile designs. While the pattern is best known in red satin glass, examples produced in opal glass represent a distinctly different and considerably rarer expression of this form.
The Vintage pattern is characterized by its softly molded surface, incorporating balanced decorative elements that provide texture and depth without overwhelming the overall silhouette. In opal glass, these details take on a more refined and luminous quality, as the translucent body allows light to interact subtly with the molded relief rather than emphasizing color saturation.
Opal glass Vintage lamps were produced in far smaller quantities than their red satin counterparts and were often marketed as more decorative or upscale alternatives. The opalescent finish lends the lamp a gentle glow and understated elegance, making it particularly appealing to collectors who favor form, light quality, and surface nuance over bold coloration.
When compared to red satin examples, opal glass Vintage lamps are generally encountered far less frequently and are often regarded as advanced collector pieces rather than entry-level examples of the pattern. The combination of reduced production, softer visual presentation, and increased decorative appeal elevates opal glass versions within the Pittsburgh Vintage hierarchy.
The lamp retains period-appropriate Pittsburgh hardware, consistent with original manufacture, and presents with well-balanced proportions suitable for both display and use in refined interiors.
This lamp falls within the category commonly referred to by collectors as a “Gone With the Wind” lamp, a modern descriptive term used to identify chamber lamps featuring both an upper and lower glass font. While not a period designation, the term is widely recognized in today’s antiques marketplace.
