Pittsburgh “Hyacinth” Chamber Lamp in Painted Opal Glass - Very Rare
Circa 1900–1905 — “Hyacinth”
The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Description
This authentic antique chamber lamp was produced by The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company during the circa 1900–1905 period and represents one of the smallest and most elusive patterned glass designs produced by the firm. Known as Hyacinth, this pattern is admired for its refined scale, restrained ornamentation, and limited production, making it a highly sought-after example among knowledgeable collectors.
The Hyacinth pattern is distinguished by its compact proportions and softly modeled surface, featuring subtle molded detailing that emphasizes form and balance rather than heavy decoration. Its smaller size sets it apart from many Pittsburgh patterns and contributes significantly to its scarcity, as fewer examples were produced and even fewer have survived intact.
This example is executed in opal glass, a particularly desirable and uncommon colorway for the Hyacinth pattern. The opalescent finish lends the lamp a soft, luminous quality that enhances its sculptural form and highlights the delicacy of the design. Opal Hyacinth lamps are seldom encountered and are often regarded as advanced collector pieces due to their rarity and visual refinement.
The lamp retains period-appropriate Pittsburgh hardware, consistent with original production standards. Its balanced proportions and elegant presence make it an exceptional display piece, well suited for curated collections where rarity and subtlety are equally valued.
This lamp falls within the category commonly referred to by collectors as a “Gone With the Wind” lamp, a modern descriptive term used to identify chamber lamps featuring both an upper and lower glass font. While not a period designation, the term is widely recognized in today’s antiques marketplace.
