Pittsburgh “Double Dolphin” Chamber Lamp in Red (Cardinal) Satin Glass - Extremely Rare
Circa 1900–1905 — Red (Cardinal) Satin Glass
The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Description
This authentic antique chamber lamp was produced by The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company during the circa 1900–1905 period and features the celebrated Double Dolphin pattern—one of the most ambitious and artistically significant designs created by Nicholas Kopp for Pittsburgh.
The Double Dolphin pattern is distinguished by its dramatic mirrored dolphin motifs, which appear in high relief on both the upper globe and lower font. These sculptural dolphins are rendered with exceptional detail and symmetry, creating a dynamic, flowing composition that exemplifies Pittsburgh’s highest level of mold craftsmanship. The pattern is widely regarded as one of the most technically complex and visually striking in the entire Pittsburgh line.
This example is executed in red (cardinal) satin glass, the only satin colorway in which the Double Dolphin pattern was produced. The satin finish provides a soft, velvety surface that diffuses light evenly, allowing the sculpted dolphin forms to emerge with depth and clarity. The rich red coloration enhances the dramatic nature of the design without overwhelming its sculptural qualities.
Double Dolphin lamps are notable for their large scale and commanding presence, standing taller than many Pittsburgh patterns and offering a true centerpiece display. Surviving examples are highly sought after by advanced collectors due to the pattern’s iconic status, limited production, and unmistakable visual impact.
The lamp retains period-appropriate Pittsburgh hardware, consistent with original manufacture, and presents as a cohesive and highly desirable example of early 20th-century American art glass lighting.
This lamp falls within the category commonly referred to by collectors as a “Gone With the Wind” lamp, a modern descriptive term used to identify chamber lamps featuring both an upper and lower glass font. While not a period designation, the term is widely recognized in today’s antiques marketplace.
