Pittsburgh “Beaded Drape” Chamber Lamp in Red (Cardinal) Satin Glass - Rare
Circa 1900–1905 — “Beaded Drape”
The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Description
This authentic antique chamber lamp was produced by The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company during the circa 1900–1905 period and represents one of the firm’s more elaborate and visually engaging patterned glass designs. Known as Beaded Drape, this pattern reflects Pittsburgh’s emphasis on decorative complexity and sculptural form at the height of American chamber lamp production.
The Beaded Drape pattern is characterized by its flowing drapery motif accented by raised beaded elements, creating a layered surface with strong visual depth and movement. The molded design wraps the font with rhythmic ornamentation that captures and reflects light, giving the lamp a rich, dimensional presence whether illuminated or unlit.
This example is executed in red (cardinal) satin glass, one of the most iconic and historically favored colorways associated with the pattern. The soft satin surface tempers the richness of the color while allowing the beaded drape decoration to remain clearly defined. Red satin examples are especially representative of Pittsburgh’s decorative aesthetic and remain highly desirable among collectors for their classic appearance.
The lamp is fitted with ornate brass-plated hardware, including a decorative collar and handle elements that complement the sculptural qualities of the glass. These details are consistent with Pittsburgh production standards and contribute to the lamp’s balanced combination of artistry and functionality.
This lamp falls within the category commonly referred to by collectors as a “Gone With the Wind” lamp, a modern descriptive term used to identify chamber lamps featuring both an upper and lower glass font. While not a period designation, the term is widely recognized in today’s antiques marketplace.
