Pittsburgh “Artichoke” or "Strawberry" or "Berry" Chamber Lamp in Decorated Opal Glass - Very Rare
(Berry Pattern – Decorated Opal Variant)
Circa 1900–1905 — Hand-Decorated Opal Glass
The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Description
This authentic antique chamber lamp was produced by The Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass & Glass Company during the circa 1900–1905 period and represents the decorated opal glass variant of the pattern commonly known as Berry, more properly identified by collectors as Artichoke when produced in decorated opal form.
The pattern is characterized by its densely textured, overlapping surface treatment, resembling clustered fruit or artichoke leaves, creating a rich, dimensional appearance across both the upper globe and lower font. This sculptural texture gives the lamp a strong visual presence while maintaining balanced proportions typical of Pittsburgh’s refined design sensibilities.
This example is executed in opal glass with hand-applied decoration, a significantly more complex and desirable presentation than the standard red satin Berry version. Decorated opal Artichoke lamps required additional finishing steps and artistic handwork, resulting in far lower production numbers. Each example is subtly unique, as the applied decoration varies slightly, further enhancing its individuality and appeal.
Decorated opal Artichoke lamps are seldom encountered intact and are regarded as advanced collector material, standing well above entry-level Pittsburgh patterns. The lamp retains period-appropriate Pittsburgh hardware, consistent with original manufacture, and presents as a cohesive, highly decorative survivor from the Golden Age of American art glass lighting.
This lamp falls within the category commonly referred to by collectors as a “Gone With the Wind” lamp, a modern descriptive term used to identify chamber lamps featuring both an upper and lower glass font. While not a period designation, the term is widely recognized in today’s antiques marketplace.
