Consolidated “Hanging Grape” Painted Opal Glass Gone With the Wind Lamp - Extremely Rare
Colored Art Glass (Non-Stenciled) | Circa 1895–1905
Consolidated Lamp & Glass Company, Coraopolis, Pennsylvania
Description
This authentic antique table lamp was produced by the Consolidated Lamp & Glass Company of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, during the circa 1895–1905 period and features the well-known Hanging Grape pattern—one of Consolidated’s most widely recognized and historically significant art glass designs.
This example is executed in colored art glass, rather than stencil-decorated or painted opal glass. The coloration is integral to the glass itself, not applied through surface painting, enamel, or stencil decoration. This produces a clean, cohesive appearance that emphasizes the depth of the molded grape clusters and vine relief while maintaining a refined, luminous quality when illuminated.
The Hanging Grape pattern is admired for its naturalistic grape and foliage motif, a design strongly associated with late Victorian and early Edwardian decorative arts. While stencil-decorated opal versions exist and are widely collected, colored glass examples without stencil decoration offer a more sculptural presentation, allowing the quality of the mold work and glass thickness to take visual precedence.
The lamp retains period-appropriate Consolidated hardware, consistent with original production standards, and presents as a cohesive and attractive survivor from the Golden Age of American art glass lighting. Its balanced proportions and rich coloration make it suitable for both display and functional use in traditional interiors or advanced antique lighting collections.
This lamp falls within the category commonly referred to by collectors as a “Gone With the Wind” lamp, a modern descriptive term used to identify lamps featuring both an upper and lower glass font. While not a period designation, the term is widely recognized in today’s antiques marketplace.
